JULY 9 - JULY 22, 2006
Location: UCLA

Rome wasn't built in a day, but new technologies are certainly speeding up the time needed to reconstruct ancient environments. The two week UCLA NEH Summer Institute is geared toward uncovering the potential of computer modeling to help us understand the Roman world. Join us as we endeavor to demystify the technology, to show what it can do, and to equip participants with the knowledge and the tools necessary to use it in their own work. Professors Sander Goldberg from the Department of Classics and Diane Favro from the Department of Architecture and Urban Design will direct this inquiry, drawing upon both historical knowledge and technical expertise in modeling ancient worlds developed at UCLA's Experiential Technologies Center (ETC).

The Institute will be held on the UCLA Westwood campus in the facilities of the ETC. In addition to sophisticated computer labs and a Technology Sandbox, we will also have access to the Visualization Portal, a state-of-the-art facility ideal for immersive viewing of real-time models. Institute participants will interact with numerous real-time models of historical spaces developed at UCLA over the last eight years, including a digital model of the Roman Forum. Most importantly, they will learn how to create, assess, and exploit new technologies to enhance knowledge about the ancient world.
